Blues Scale vs Pentatonic — Guitar Examples

Blues Scale vs Pentatonic — Guitar Examples

Guitar · 96 BPM · 5 examples

A minor pentatonic has five notes: 1, b3, 4, 5, b7. It gives you the core blues/rock vocabulary and tends to sound cleaner and more stable.

The A blues scale is the same scale with one extra note, the b5: 1, b3, 4, b5, 5, b7. That extra note adds tension and is usually most effective as a passing or resolving tone.

The A major pentatonic uses 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and sounds brighter. Adding the b3 gives a major-blues color by creating expressive tension against the major 3rd.

2 — The b5 isolated and resolved

Guitar
Eb is the blue note. Hear it resolve up to E in the first bar and down to D in the second; that tension-and-release is more important than simply adding a sixth scale tone.

4 — A major pentatonic plus b3

Guitar
A major pentatonic is A B C# E F#. Adding C natural before C# creates the major-blues sound: the b3 is used as expressive tension against the major 3rd.

5 — Minor-blues language over a full 12-bar A blues

Guitar
A minor-pentatonic/blues phrase is dropped into each section of the full chorus. The same vocabulary works across A7, D7 and E7 because the blue notes act as expressive tensions rather than spelling every chord literally.
