Import sheet music
Turn MusicXML, Guitar Pro files, PDFs and photos into an editable score.
You can start a project from music you already have. In Music Block Studio, open the arrow next to New score and choose Import a file or Import a scan.
| Source | What to upload |
|---|---|
| MusicXML | .musicxml, .xml or compressed .mxl exported from MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale, Dorico… |
| Guitar Pro | .gp, .gpx, .gp7, .gp5, .gp4, .gp3 |
| A sheet-music PDF. Printed scores work best. | |
| Photo | A clear, straight photo of a printed page |
Files can be up to 4 MB. A scan can have several files, up to 4 MB together; photos are resized to fit.
Several pages in one score
If a piece spans more than one page, add all its pages to the same scan and they are read as one score in one project:
- Choose several files at once, or drop or paste them into the dialog. To add a page later, press Add pages.
- Check the order: the number on each page is its place in the score. Drag a page to move it (on a keyboard, focus it and use the arrow keys).
- Click a page to see it full size. Remove a page with its ✕.
- When the order is right, press Import … as one score.
A PDF counts as all of its pages, kept in their order. You are charged for every page.
Scans and photos cost credits
Reading a PDF or photo uses music recognition, which is charged in credits. File imports (MusicXML, Guitar Pro) are free.
Import review
Music recognition is good but not perfect. After a scan import, open History: the import's entry lists everything it repaired or is unsure about, grouped by bar.
- Click an item to highlight its bar on the score. Click again to clear the highlight.
- Mark items as checked one by one, or all at once. Until you do, the History button shows a dot.
- Some items have a fix button. It puts the fix into the chat box so you can send it to the assistant.
- Scans often misread key signatures on lines where the page prints none, so a scan keeps its opening key throughout: any key change it reads is undone and listed under "Needs review". If the original really does change key there, press Keep key change.
Tips for better scans
- Photograph the page flat and in good light, with no shadow across the staves.
- Fill the frame with the page and keep it straight.
- One page per photo. For longer pieces, add each page's photo to the same scan, or use a PDF.
